The Real Christmas

Every year, in the first part of December, in downtown Waterloo, New York, a Christmas festival takes place. This is not like your everyday Christmas festival. It is The Real Christmas…

Luke 2: 1-11

“And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Different scenes line the sidewalks.  As one travels from scene to scene, a Christmas story is told.  In this story, there is no Santa Claus, tiny elves, or toys.  It is the story about the true meaning behind Christmas and the reason why people celebrate.

The scenes start with the prophecy and end with the birth of Jesus Christ.  After one is done visiting the scenes, Christmas carols and concessions can be enjoyed in Memorial Day Park.

However, the whole day is started off with a ceremony in Memorial Day Park where there is the lighting of the tree and the Honorary Angel is named.

Even if Religion is Not Your Thing....

Even if a person is not religious, this is a wonderful small-town event and there are many other activities besides the Christmas scenes.  This is a time when all the churches and all the people of the town, no matter what religion, come together to celebrate this wonderful time of the year.

Activities are spread all over downtown.  There is a Christmas parade, a chili cook-off, Christmas crafts for kids, carolers wandering the streets, a Christmas play, and so much more.  It is wonderful to see a community come together during the holidays; to be able to put aside differences and just enjoy the magic in the season.

This year The Real Christmas will take place on December 5 and 6th.  More details will follow as an official listing of this year’s activities has yet to be released to the public.

If you find yourself out and about during this small town celebration, make sure that you find some time to stop by.

There is nothing like a small-town atmosphere, good food, and wonderful company.  It is such a wonderful way to get the Holiday season started off.  And it is a great reminder that Christmas isn't all about the material things that come along with it.

There is a real reason behind the season and Waterloo, New York remembers that!  You don't want to miss it!
